The shallow waters of Studland Bay make it a haven for seagrass and the animals who call it home. It’s a breeding ground for both species of UK native seahorse.
To protect this important habitat, Studland Bay Marine Partnership (SBMP) was formed, bringing together conservation groups, boating organisations, academics, community groups and local businesses.
In 2021, Studland Bay was designated a Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) to protect the valuable species and habitats that thrive there. SBMP are working hard to ensure that the objectives of the MCZ are met, whilst incorporating recreational water-users into their approach.
To enhance the protection of the MCZ, and to highlight the Voluntary No Anchor Zone (VNAZ), Studland Bay now benefits from Blue Meadows’ Sensitive Habitat Marker Buoys. Our distinctive yellow buoys have been placed on the seaward perimeter of the VNAZ, making it clear to water-users that they are entering a sensitive seagrass habitat. As of 2025, Studland Bay is home to 22 Sensitive Habitat Marker Buoys, protecting around 100 hectares of seagrass.
